Organization Description
Global Smile Foundation (GSF) envisions a world where no child or adult suffers
needlessly from untreated cleft. We believe that every individual, regardless of their background
or circumstances, deserves the opportunity to lead a life free from the burdens of living with a
disability such as cleft. We strive for a future where specialized medical care is not a privilege
but a universally accessible right, ensuring that no child or adult is left behind due to financial
constraints or lack of resources. Our mission is to build global capacity for cleft care practices
worldwide through empowerment and sustainability initiatives while providing free
comprehensive cleft care for underserved patients in developing countries

GSF current medical outreach program sites are Beirut (Lebanon), Trujillo (Peru),
Guayaquil (Ecuador), and San Salvador (El Salvador), the schedule is generally set in advance.
GSF has organized yearly educational workshops (Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop –
CCCW) in addition to our global health research fellowship program.
GSF is an approved 501(C)(3) not for profit organization according to the Internal
Revenue Service

Job Description
The 2-year global health research fellowship (GHRF) offers a unique opportunity to
become involved in a variety of research projects, all of which are conducive to obtaining peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings. A successful GHRF will be expected to organize and carry out multiple research projects, be involved in outreach programs (3-5 times per year), in addition to assisting in administrative tasks.
This program allows for personal and professional development, research opportunities,
networking with leaders in all arenas of comprehensive cleft care, and nonclinical outreach patient care.

Additionally, GSF gives fellows the opportunity to take a one-month US-based internship
at the hospital of choice. The Fellowship Coordinator will help with this.
The GHRF will need to be based in Boston, MA, USA as this is an in-person job. The GHRF
will report to the Fellowship Coordinator with overview from the Fellowship Director, Fellowship
Assistant Director, and President of Global Smile Foundation.
For non-U.S. citizens, the J-1 Research visa is issued via our is affiliation with the
Department of Plastic Surgery at University of Irvine (UCI) California
GSF offers a taxable stipend of $2,000/month.

The Global Health Research Fellow is responsible for:

▪ GSF Research projects, including but not limited to

  1. Literature search
  2. Submission to GSF’s ERB if necessary
  3. Grant submission if applicable
  4. Develop and maintain project-specific databases
  5. Lead data collection efforts with responsibilities including creating data collection tools, developing data collection workflow plans, and entering data
  6. Data Analysis
  7. Author, or co-author, articles and submit them to peer-reviewed journals
  8. Provide Weekly Progress & status updates to supervisors

▪ GSF Education Activities

  1. Help with workshops, lectures, PowerPoints
  2.  Edit surgical videos
  3. Actively participate in research meetings

▪ GSF Outreach Programs 

  1. Paperwork preparation & submission
  2.  Support in packing before each program
  3. Photo Administration & Trip Report Production when assigned
  4.  OR Coordination when assigned
  5.  Data collection of ongoing research projects
  6.  Carry out other assigned/delegated tasks

Submit at least 1-grant/year
▪ Data entry into GSF’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, including part, current,
and future missions
▪ Assist in Bookkeeping
▪ Support in miscellaneous administrative tasks in the office: printing, scanning, event
planning

Required Qualifications
▪ MD Degree
Step 1 Completed & Passed
Step 2 preferably done before start of GHRF, or to be scheduled & completed within the
first 6-months of the first year of fellowship.
▪ Must have excellent English communication skills: both written and verbal.
▪ 1-3 peer-reviewed published articles
▪ Advanced organizational skills that include prioritization, multi-tasking and ability to flex
workload to adapt to changing priorities and organizational needs
▪ Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of diverse individuals and personalities from
different cultures and backgrounds.
▪ Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving
problems.
▪ Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
▪ Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications
▪ Familiar with Statistical principles & programs
▪ Acquainted with Photoshop & video editing programs
▪ Past grant submission
▪ Spanish- or Arabic- speaking.
