ILMA-KU Research Fellow Program 2025: Advancing Medical Research

In 2025, ILMAUSA raised $300,000 to expand its support for Lebanese students pursuing medical research at the University of Kansas. We are proud to announce that through the ILMA-KU Research Fellow Program, five fellows have been awarded one-year positions. Below are their brief bios.

Dr. Marcel Katrib
Gastroenterology

Marcel Katrib earned his medical degree from the University of Balamand, North Lebanon, graduating in July 2024. As a dedicated M.D. and researcher, he is passionate about medicine, research, and patient care. His journey has been shaped by a commitment to learning, mentorship, and holistic healthcare. Outside of medicine, his experiences as a musician and athlete have taught him discipline, creativity, and perseverance—qualities that enhance his approach to patient care. He strives to communicate effectively and provide compassionate, well-rounded care that addresses both physical and emotional well-being. Ultimately, his goal is to contribute meaningfully to healthcare and make a positive impact on patients’ lives.

Dr. Alexandre Khoury
Hematology/Oncology

Alexandre Khoury is a dedicated medical student at Saint Joseph University’s Faculty of Medicine in Beirut, Lebanon. He has gained hands-on clinical experience through rotations at Hôtel-Dieu de France, contributing to patient care and research projects. With a strong foundation in clinical trials, he has co-authored multiple research papers. Outside of academics, Alexandre is a professional tennis player, an avid reader, and an enthusiastic hiker, constantly seeking new challenges and personal growth.

Dr. Anthony Albayeh
Hematology/Oncology

Anthony Albayeh is a final-year medical student at the University of Balamand. He has been passionate about medicine since his time in medical laboratory studies, where he graduated with distinction. Throughout his medical studies, he has consistently ranked among the top students in his class. He is particularly interested in pursuing a career in hematology and oncology and believes that working at the Cancer Center of Kansas would be an incredible opportunity to further develop his research skills and medical knowledge. Anthony is an empathetic individual who strives to connect with others and make a positive impact. In his free time, he assists his mother in managing her Lebanese restaurant in Zgharta and enjoys staying active by working out and hiking.

Dr. Nicolas Najm
Anesthesia

Dr. Nicolas Najm, an MD graduate from the American University of Beirut, specializes in anesthesia and minimally invasive surgery. He has contributed to several research projects and volunteered at free student-led clinics, providing essential services to underserved communities. Dr. Najm has authored two publications in high-impact medical journals. In his free time, he enjoys biking and reading. With a strong foundation in medical research and a dedication to patient care, Dr. Najm aims to be a leading figure among emerging medical professionals.

Dr. Laura ElHalabi
Hematology/Oncology

Dr. Laura Halabi, is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in oncology at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.
She earned her medical degree from the University of Balamand and specializes in clinical trial management and cancer registry analysis. She previously worked as a Research Assistant, focusing on quality control and tumor marker reports.
